A revolutionary product developed by BASF and SoloPower Systems as an alternative to a conventional roof sheeting has been launched worldwide. The roofing system is a multi-layered system with Architects and developers will have alternative to photovoltaic panels mounted on conventional roofs.
The seamless multi-layered system can be up to 60% lighter than a conventional roof due to its use of unique light weight construction materials throughout its design. The roofing system combines roof panels, waterproofing membrane and solar panels. The use of composite structural insulating panels provides a cost-effective way to comply with the national energy efficiency regulations (SANS 10400 XA).
The photovoltaic section of the roofing system has a 25-year power warranty and the modules have a 30-year life expectancy. This compares favourably with other roofing systems on the market. The aperture efficiency is 13.4% and the power will degenerate over the lifespan of 30 years to 80% of the original generation capability.
BASF believes that the product promises considerable opportunities for cost effective energy generation and energy saving. It combines energy efficiency, power generation, waterproofing and water harvesting, which adds proven value to the bottom line of manufacturing, industrial and commercial businesses.
