Hambanathi is a predominately Zulu-speaking community of Tongaat, north of Durban. Tongaat is a town which is associated with sugar because Tongaat Hullets has its base in Tongaat.
A notable person to have come out of this community is Thandeka Zulu who is an actress and musician, known for her role as Nombuso in the telenovela Uzalo. She grew up singing and dancing in Hambanathi in Tongaat. She schooled at Nkosibomvu High School, where she matriculated.
Nkosibomvu High School became the meeting place for learners from this community who will participate the Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal’s Vuka Makhi Programme.
On Saturday 27th January Victor Smith and Mandisa Khumalo of Master Builders KwaZulu-Natal visited Nkosibomvu High School to meet with parents and grade 11 learners who have been selected to participate in the Association’s Vuka Makhi Programme. It was with great anticipation that the learners and parents arrived at school to find out more about the intervention. Many questions were asked, and clarity was given.
Parents praised the initiative as it will contribute greatly to the transformation of the construction industry. It is interesting to note that girls make up more than 50% of the programme.
Learners will be transported from their school every Saturday morning to Master Builders Centre in Westville and to this end, a local taxi operator has been engaged. He was present at the meeting and is also proud to be part of this initiative which will contribute to the upliftment of the Hambanathi community
